Cam often draws pictures for his friends and teachers using the class whiteboards. This activity shows that he is caring because he is thinking of other people and doing something to make them happy!
This week we measured our heights for the very last time in K1. We noticed that once again, we had all grown taller! We reflected individually and as a whole class on the changes that had happened. We also made comparisons between each other's heights using math vocabulary, like taller and shorter.
Here is Cameron's explanation of how and why he grew. During our class discussion, he said:
"Lucy is short because I'm taller than her and everyone in the class is taller than her."
"I'm tall because I'm taller than Aziz because he's 4 and I'm 5."
"You can grow in two ways: you can eat veggies every day or you can have your birthday."
All year we have been working on representing numbers in different ways. Cameron wanted this particular piece to be included in his portfolio because: "I did a good job of counting how many dots and then I did the dots in the tens frame and I wrote the number."
Cameron has been working on consolidating his knowledge of numbers between 0 and 10. He is practicing identifying numbers above 5 and naming the number before or after a given number. Here is is playing 'What's Missing?' with Axel. The boys are using the 0 to 10 Number Line to figure out what number their partner removed from the card number line.
Cameron is becoming more and more confident with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. As he consolidates this knowledge, he is beginning to apply it to his independent writing. In this activity, Cameron sorted the sounds 'c' and 'd' using picture cards in his word study notebook.
During our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry, Cam practiced creating and telling stories in different formats. Cam created this story using the iPad app 'Draw & Tell'.
"The cars didn't explode because they're made of steel. Even the traffic is made of steel."
Cam thinks this is an example of his best work because: "I got to colour and put the stickers on. I had good ideas." Ms. Alison agrees that this story is an example of Cam's best work because, although he was originally nervous and hesitant, he took a risk to create an original story using his own imagination.
Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.
In other words . . . a celebration of learning!
Here is Cameron's reflection on his Student-led Conference:
"It was very good because first my brother did it then I did mine and I had fun."
Recently we have been doing a lot of playing with shapes. We have been studying their form and observing how they appear in different ways in the world around us. Aziz can confidently name the common shapes: circle, triangle, square and rectangle. His favourite work with shapes was when he used the shape stencils to trace and then colour in different shapes. He chose this piece for his portfolio because: "I made one house with a square and a triangle. I liked colouring the shapes." This work shows how Cameron is able to manipulate shapes to make new designs and images -- like a house!
One day, Cameron brought it some work to show at our Morning Meeting that he had made at home. It was a paper filled with beautiful coloured shapes. As soon as he showed his work, his friends started to name the shapes they knew in his work.
Cameron's inspiring piece became the introduction for a study of shapes in our class. We started by making a big list of all the shapes we knew. Since then we have been exploring in many different ways. Thank you Cameron for the great idea!
