Frankie's favourite part of our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry was reading the story Where the Wild Things Are. Frankie said he wanted to include this experience in his portfolio because "I like Max."
Ms. Alison agrees that Where the Wild Things Are is an example of Frankie's best work because he showed a sustained interest in the book and represented it in different ways over time. Here are two of Frankie's visual representations of the book:
Frankie also practiced retelling this story through a dramatic performance:
This week we measured our heights for the very last time in K1. We noticed that once again, we had all grown taller! We reflected individually and as a whole class on the changes that had happened. We also made comparisons between each other's heights using math vocabulary, like taller and shorter.
As a class we read a story about the number 8. We learned how spiders are symbols for 8 because they have 8 legs and 8 eyes. Frankie loved this story and wanted his follow-up work to be included in his portfolio because: "8 is my favourite number because I like 8."
Frankie has been working on identifying the numbers before and after a given number and forming numbers correctly in writing. Today he worked independently to fill in the missing numbers in sequences. This is an example of Frankie's best work because he concentrated well and didn't rely on the number line to support his thinking. He took his time to form numbers correctly and double checked his work by saying the numbers to himself through a whisper phone.
Frankie is becoming more and more confident with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. He sorted the sounds 'm' and 'r' using picture cards in his word study notebook and learned a few new words in the process.
Frankie used this photograph of his friends playing with the road mats and cars to collect ideas for a story. He used the iPad app Draw & Tell to illustrate his story and record his voice.
Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.
In other words . . . a celebration of learning!
Here is Frankie's reflection on his Student-led Conference:
Recently we have been doing a lot of playing with shapes. We have been studying their form and observing how they appear in different ways in the world around us. Frankie loves making designs with shapes. He is learning the shape names and can now name triangles, rectangles and circles. His work below shows how Frankie manipulates shapes to make pictures and models.
