Aziz has worked hard at learning how to form numbers all year long. He often practices during them during his free playtime using the whiteboards and whiteboard markers to show what he can do. Aziz can now .............e confidently. Well done Aziz! You showed a lot of commitment and responsibility towards your own learning!

Aziz's favourite part of our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry was retelling Where the Wild Things Are through drama. He chose to include this piece in his portfolio because: "I was king and the wild rumpus was fun. I did a good job of being Max." Ms. Alison agrees that this is an example of Aziz's best work. He supported his group by remembering details from the story which needed to be included in their retell. When he was practicing the dramatic retell, he showed that he understood the feelings of the main character Max, when he explained that he had to act lonely to show how Max was feeling on the Wild Things' island. This week we measured our heights for the very last time in K1. We noticed that once again, we had all grown taller! We reflected individually and as a whole class on the changes that had happened. We also made comparisons between each other's heights using math vocabulary, like taller and shorter. Here is Aziz's explanation of how and why he grew. During our class discussion, he said:
As a class we read a story about the number 10. We learned how our hands and feet are symbols for 10 because we have 10 fingers and 10 toes. Aziz loved this story and wanted his follow-up work to be included in his portfolio because: "I got to write 10, 10, 10, 10... It's 1 and 0 and I did a good job of writing the numbers and I even traced my hand."
Today Aziz independently started telling some parts of The Three Little Pigs story in his play. He decided to document his ideas using the iPad app 'Puppet Pals': Aziz has a strong concept of number and is working on transferring this to when numbers are represented in writing. Recently he has been working on challenging herself and exploring numbers in the teens, including what they represent, how they are written and how they are sequenced. Here he is working with Ayesha to choose the numbers that come after and before a given number in the teens.
Aziz created this story using the iPad app 'Draw & Tell': Aziz is showing an increasing sense of rhyme awareness. When we read a book with words that rhyme, he notices this quickly and shares his observation with the class. One of the favourite word sorts he completed in his word study journal is the rhyme sort below where he had to match rhyming picture cards to the words nose, head, hair, and knees.
