What is Action?
Action is one of the five essential elements in the PYP curriculum framework. In this approach, it is believed that education must extend beyond the intellectual to include socially-responsible attitudes and thoughtful and appropriate action. Students often initiate action as a result of the inquiry learning process. This action may extend the student's learning or have a wider community or social impact.
Effective action can be big or small. It usually begins at the most immediate and basic levels: with the self; within the family; within the classroom, the hallways and the playground. Even very young children can have strong feelings about fairness and justice. As adults, we can facilitate positive expressions of these opinions. Effective action can be a demonstration of a sense of responsibility and respect for self, others and the environment. It may also be a simple independent extension of learning.
