Every week we work on sorting different words in our word study journals. One of Emma's favourite activities was when we explored the number of syllables (or word chunks) in words from The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Emma clapped the syllables she heard in the words on the picture cards and sorted them into one or two syllable groups:
Emma created this story using the iPad app 'Draw & Tell': Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.
In other words . . . a celebration of learning! Here is Emma's reflection on her Student-led Conference: "I was playing Roll and Record with my mum and dad." Recently we have been doing a lot of playing with shapes. We have been studying their form and observing how they appear in different ways in the world around us. Emma enjoys making designs with 2D shapes and incorporating them into her play. She can now name the common shapes: circle, triangle, square and rectangle. She is also challenging herself to learn the names of new, more complicated shapes which she shows in this video. Emma chose to include her stamping work with shapes in her portfolio because: "I made it all and I was stamping and it made me happy." Emma participates enthusiastically in all of our class activities. She shows her excitement with her words and body language. This week when we celebrated World Health Day she decided to join in with the older students who were doing morning exercises in the playground. Later that morning she shared what she had done and learned with her K1AC classmates our Morning Meeting. Thanks for all of your excitement and enthusiasm Emma!
As our 'How we organize ourselves' unit of inquiry is coming to an end, we are reflecting on all of our experiences and learning and working on "showing what we know". This week, Ms. Alison, Mr. Nathan and Ms. Karla set up a playscape in the playground full of extra equipment and materials to move with. Students participated in free play or movement with the equipment and then sat down with a teacher to explain how and why they move in certain ways. Here is Emma's conference using the 'Explain Everything' iPad app: Emma's favourite part of our 'How we organize ourselves' unit of inquiry was our field trip to the Somerset MRT. She chose to include this experience in her portfolio because: "We went to the MRT with Wilma's mum and it was fun and made me happy. The MRT made us move around this way and that way."
