Creating Stories

During our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry, Lucy worked on creating her own stories. Here is one that she created in her stories journal. She used her drawings skills and her knowledge of letters and sounds to record her story with illustrations and writing. Lucy wanted to include this piece of work in her portfolio because "I like it. There was water up to their necks. I did a good job of writing." Ms. Alison agrees that this is an example of Lucy's best work because she took risks to invent stories using her creativity and imagination.

Reflecting on Height & Growth

06/03/2014

This week we measured our heights for the very last time in K1. We noticed that once again, we had all grown taller! We reflected individually and as a whole class on the changes that had happened. We also made comparisons between each other's heights using math vocabulary, like taller and shorter.

Here is Lucy's explanation of how and why she grew. During our class discussion, she said:
  • "I think I'm medium."
  • "I grew taller because I eat eggs."

Representing Numbers in Different Ways

All year we have been working on the different ways we can represent numbers. Lucy wanted this particular piece of work to be included in her portfolio because: "I like the last dot card that's all mixed up. It looks like an alien with lots of eyes but I could still count it."

Writing Numbers Before, After & Between

05/12/2014

Lucy has been working on identifying the numbers before and after a given number and forming numbers correctly in writing. Yesterday she worked independently to fill in the missing numbers in sequences. This is an example of Lucy's best work because she concentrated well and used the number line to support her thinking. She took her time to form numbers correctly and double checked her work.

Lucy has been working on consolidating her alphabet knowledge and gaining confidence to apply it consistently in her writing. Here is an example of the sorting work she completes in her word study journal. In this activity she worked on sorting picture cards of words that start with the sounds 'b', 'm', 'r', and 's':

Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.

In other words . . . a celebration of learning!

Here is Lucy's reflection on her Student-led Conference:

"I liked playing Roll and Record with mummy and daddy."

Inspiring Patterns

One morning during her free play, Lucy created this pattern using different faces. When she showed it during our Morning Meeting, her friends were inspired to figure out what her pattern was and how they could make their own. Thanks Lucy for confidently presenting your work and giving us the idea to make our own patterns!

Designing with Shapes

04/08/2014

Recently we have been doing a lot of playing with shapes. We have been studying their form and observing how they appear in different ways in the world around us. Lucy can confidently name the common shapes: circle, triangle, square and rectangle. She is also challenging herself to learn the names of new, more complicated shapes. Lucy enjoys making different designs and images with shapes. She chose to include this piece of work in her portfolio because: "I made a mummy and daddy as diamonds. I made rectangles and circles to make trucks. There's a house with arms. It's my favourite because I made it."
