Henry's favourite part of our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry was creating his Lego Adventure film using the Smoovie and Garage Band iPad apps. He explained that he enjoyed it because "the black guy didn't have two eyes and one had magic and one was just a door."
Henry is becoming more and more confident with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. As he consolidates this knowledge he is beginning to apply it to his independent writing. In this activity, Henry sorted the sounds 'm' and 'r' using picture cards in his word study notebook and learned a few new words in the process.
As emergent writers, we are always taking risks in writing. We are experimenting with sounds and letter formations, as well as pencil grip and different writing tools. As the year continues we are learning to make more and more letter and sound connections to express our ideas through writing. In our journals we do our best to add labels, descriptions, or short stories to our drawings. We also participate in free writing sessions where we write whatever we want for one to two minutes and use the writing centre and class mailbox to communicate through writing during free play.
Here is some of Henry's journal and free writing work. Henry knows that print conveys a message and has started adding writing to his drawings to explain them and communicate ideas. Keep it up Henry!
