In recognition and celebration of Peace Day 2013 at our school, Kindergarten 1 planned a performance and invited classes to participate in some peace-related activities. We displayed our thoughts about peace outside our classroom, shared books that related to peace, and asked other students to make drawn or written contributions so that we could compile them to make a big Peace Book.
We thought of the following "central idea" for all grade levels to position their thinking and chosen activities around: Peace begins with me. My peaceful words and actions help me to form relationships and make and keep friends. Our investigation into and promotion of peace also connected to our current unit of inquiry which has us thinking about how the people around us shape who we are, what the roles of families and friends are, and what we can do to be good friends.
