In other words . . . a celebration of learning!
Here is Aziz's reflection on his Student-led Conference:
"I liked it when I played cards."
Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.

Recently we have been doing a lot of playing with shapes. We have been studying their form and observing how they appear in different ways in the world around us. Aziz can confidently name the common shapes: circle, triangle, square and rectangle. He is also challenging himself to learn the names of new, more complicated shapes which he shows in this video. Aziz's favourite work with shapes was when he played with the shape stamps. He chose to include this piece of work in his portfolio because: "I like shapes because they're fun to play with." As our 'How we organize ourselves' unit of inquiry is coming to an end, we are reflecting on all of our experiences and learning and working on "showing what we know". This week, Ms. Alison, Mr. Nathan and Ms. Karla set up a playscape in the playground full of extra equipment and materials to move with. Students participated in free play or movement with the equipment and then sat down with a teacher to explain how and why they move in certain ways. Here is Aziz's conference using the 'Explain Everything' iPad app: ) Aziz's favourite part of our 'How we organize ourselves' unit of inquiry was when we played soccer on the field as part of our investigation into what exercise is. He decided to include this experience in his portfolio because: "I like kicking the ball in the net. It's exercise because it's tiring." This shows that Aziz has made connections between different movements, sports and exercise over the course of our unit of inquiry. ) As emergent writers, we are always taking risks in writing. We are experimenting with sounds and letter formations, as well as pencil grip and different writing tools. As the year continues we are learning to make more and more letter and sound connections to express our ideas through writing. In our journals we do our best to add labels, descriptions, or short stories to our drawings. We also participate in free writing sessions where we write whatever we want for one to two minutes and use the writing centre and class mailbox to communicate through writing during free play.
Here is some of Aziz's journal and free writing work. Aziz is becoming more confident with the correct formation of letters and is increasingly making direct connections between the sounds he hears and the letters he writes! Aziz made this pattern using manipulatives and drew it in his math journal. He decided to include this piece in his portfolio because "I like the colours." This work shows his ability to create and extend simple patterns.
During our unit of inquiry we became very interested in the changing position of the sun in the sky and the changing colours we saw. We read the book Sky Color by Peter Reynolds to support our ideas and went outside to observe and make some sketches of the sky.
Aziz chose this piece for his portfolio because "I did a good job of drawing the sky."
