Axel used this photo of his friends playing to collect ideas for a story. He illustrated the story and recorded his voice telling the story using the Draw & Tell app on an iPad. This work shows that Axel understands that a story needs a beginning, middle and end.
Axel is becoming more confident with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. He sorted the sounds 'm' and 'r' using picture cards in his word study notebook and learned a few new words in the process.
Student-led conferences are a chance for students to take the lead and show their families some of their best work, favourite activities, and how much progress they've made over the year.
In other words . . . a celebration of learning!

As we learn about basic 2D shapes and their forms we have been exploring different ways to create with shapes. Here is an example of Axel's shape play: "I made a bus". Axel chose to include this piece of work in his portfolio because "It's so many things." Click 'Play Fotobabble' to listen to his description of his work.
Axel loves playing with language! Often during his free play or eating times he repeats songs and stories that he has heard, changing words and sentences to make new meaning from the text. This skill or activity is called 'Text Innovation' and is an important part of the emergent reading and writing process.
